ID0LIZE ME!
“ Dear Rihanna .
When I grow up, I can only hope to have an impact on someone’s life as you have had on mine. Its typical for a celebrity to say, “Yes, I am a role model.” However I don’t think you guys really know the impact you can have on the life of someone else. I’ve always had this image, of how people should live their lives. And that’s just to live it. Growing up I found it hard to explain my carefree attitude and diverse style. Still, I was some what influenced by my surroundings and by society. It wasn’t until I started paying attention to you that I began the journey to truly being whoever it was I wanted to be. In my world, you came in and completely dominated music, fashion, and love. You showed new ways to express these key things in life.
I was always a fan. But never as big of a fan as I am now. It was in 2007 when it really hit me that you were my idol. For a while I had been begging my mom to cut my hair. And of course she refused. My thing was, everyone wanted long hair. Like that was the craze. Light skinned with long hair. I wanted to break free from that cycle. Going into high school was basically when everyone wanted a weave and to have long flowing hair. Because that’s exactly what the media told us was beautiful. And really, who doesn’t want to be considered beautiful. But then, Good Girl Gone Bad promo pictures were released. And you cut your hair. I freaked! Like oh my god! She is bold. And the cut was so cute. Umbrella released and at first a lot of people were skeptical. Because it was a different sound, a different style, and definitely a different image. It takes a lot for people to adjust to different, and them embrace it.
Every year, you come stronger with your newer sound and incredible talent. Its like, where females typically sang about crushing on a dude; you came straight with it. “if its loving that you want, then you should make me your girl.” where R&B songs cried out about being broken hearted, you admitted to being “Unfaithful” and later on requested that he “Take A Bow.” Like, R&B gets sickening sometimes. Simply because its always the same thing. Makeup, breakup. Love him, he doesn’t love me back. Blah, blah, blah. But you’re not afraid to be bold and go for what you want. Or stand up for yourself and send a guy packing when he does you wrong. ”
-- I never got to finish this. Funny, iWrote this about 2 days before my birthday ( February 7th ). My friend Shantel had encouraged me to write a letter to Rihanna [just for writing purposes]. It was an interesting task. And despite the fact that iKnew it wasn’t going to be sent, it still gave me butterflies and iWas nervous as iTyped. But yes, February 7th which happened to be the night [leading into February 8th] that iWould say changed this woman’s life.
The last thing iTyped in my letter was “Or stand up for yourself and send a guy packing when he does you wrong.” it shouldn’t surprise anyone that iTook the Rihanna and Chris Brown ordeal kind of personally. And for a brief moment; disowned her as my idol because of the heavy disappointment left with me after reviewing her choices in the matter. It was like she didn’t reflect anything iThought her to.
But theres a point here- don’t worry!
My best friend Halima once said, “Your idol isn’t someone you want to be like, its some one you hope to achieve more than.” You can set a mark to achieve and imitate the successes of your idols. However- know that is not your limit. Seek to achieve higher and to be greater. Because that is truly how legends are born.
Rihanna is my idol in Fashion and Girl Power ! Her style is truly original and [in my opinion] she is the face of Female Dominance [as well as Beyonce -_-] When it comes to Fashion iToo aspire to be an icon for all those who look up to me and any who’s laid eyes on me. But further than having everyone know my name, the voice iWant to share is that women can do ANYTHING. that’s why I’m Incredible.
Quincy Jones is my idol in music. Man this guy is greatness! But you want to know why I’m going to be better than him? Because iPlan on being a female- accomplishing things in the music industry that no one thought possible. iPlan to defy the standards set for men and open doors for female producers, CEO’s, A&R reps, presidents of labels, COMPOSERS, and so much more. Its my duty to do more than recreate the industry. I’m going to dominate it.
Rih&QDJ are my idols. They set my bar for Greatness. But only iCan* set my bar for Legacy.

Oh! So, this entry’s post question is…. Who is/are your idol/s, why, and how do you plan on being greater?
